Read in 2023:
Gwen had no doubt that whoever he was, his ancestors had absolutely once stared down the business end of guillotine. You don't get cheekbones like that without oppressing some peasants.

review:
trigger warnings: shitty fathers i guess yeah okay, the ex hex was definitely better than this, which is so shocking because usually i prefer enemies to lovers over second chance romance. what i liked — ☆ the mystery was better than the mystery in the ex hex. it definitely felt like the stakes were much higher. the (kinda) red herring worked on me so that was nice. ☆ gwyn and wells were cute actually, i liked them. i thought they had a good amount of chemistry. ☆ SIR PURRCIVAL I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOUUUU. ☆ i also loved gwyn's baby witches. i thought that was such a fun idea. what i didn't like — ★ the resolution to the mystery was sooo bad?? just so extremely convenient on every front. i wish so badly that it was a bit more clever and had a bit more tension. ★ this had the same problem as the first book - the mcs went from enemies to lovers so quickly, there was nothing gradual about it. no in-between stage. ★ quite frankly parts of it were plain boring. i did find my attention drifting a lot towards the middle.

The Kiss Curse
Tumblr media
A 4 star read for me | Vivi, Rhys, Gwyn and Wells are great but Percival has my whole entire heart! Treats! And he calls Gwyn Mama 🥺
I loved Gwyn and her baby Witches, together they were adorable
The book was funny, it made me giggle a bunch of time
I wasn't the biggest fan of the pacing in this book. It wasn't the greatest, kinda different from the first book.
Also, I listened to this on audio and was disappointed that there is a different narrator. I really liked the narrator of the first book but eith this one I didn't like the male voices, it gave me slight cringies
⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Kiss Curse (Ex Hex #2) by Erin Sterling
“She noticed, he was wearing one black shoe and one navy one, and if she hadn’t already fallen in love with him sometime between the night he’d found Sir Purrcival and the moment she’d walked into this shop on the day of the Gathering and seen him frantically making cups of tea, those mismatched shoes would’ve done it.»

Yaaaay! More Sir Purrcival!!
I loved him so, so, so, so much in The Ex Hex, and he's just as delightful in The Kiss Curse (although the part I just got through nearly took a couple years off my life because I was so concerned for his safety).
Nobody move or breathe or speak please omg I think I'm enjoying another paranormal romance, at last 🙏😓

Bought my friend The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling for Christmas. I read it after she finished it.
And.
Listen, it's just a fun read. I think the last rant I put on here I saod good books don't have to be revolutionary. Art's point is to make you feel something. I felt seen and heard and inspired to write honestly.
But then fucking Jessica V from God knows where commented that she disliked it and the only reason she sourced was "the nonbjnary character didn't make sense. It was so confusing to read because their would mean the group of three and then suddenly their meant one singular person."
Don't. Just don't. I asked my friend if it was difficult for her to understand (I've been saying they for years about literally everyone now honestly so I thought maybe it was just my bias) and she said absolutely not. She said the writing was clear especially in those sentences.
Stop letting your fucking prejudices about gay people (or literally anyone for that matter) dislike a book or any kthef form of media.
Oh yeah and then on goodreads someone said they didn't like that the Hex Ex universe was continued....
Did you....did you not read the description? (I didn't realize you should read Ex Hex first but honestly it read clearly enough since they're both technically novels. I wasn't confused.)
Peoppe just baffle me.

I think I enjoyed The Kiss Curse a little more than the first book in the series. Probably because enemies to lovers (when done well) is always going to be more my vibe than second chance romance but mostly because Gwyn and Wells were FUN. I loved their banter and the magic situation they were caught up in was intriguing. I did feel like the climactic action scene was over very quickly and everything got dealt with a little suddenly, but obviously the romance is the main draw of these books so thats fine. I'll defs be picking up the third book when it's released.

So ridiculously thankful my eReader is backlit 😂 much nicer than reading on my phone. And I don't need a book light like when I was small!
I'm thinking I'm gonna shell out money for the newer version of this one though that's waterproof and has dark mode 🤔
